Seladore appoints Liang-Ying Tan as Partner with view to establishing presence in Singapore

5 November 2024

Seladore Legal, the disputes-only law firm headquartered in London, is pleased to announce the appointment of Liang-Ying Tan as Partner. Based initially in New York, Liang-Ying intends to eventually relocate to her native Singapore to help advance Seladore’s expansion in the city-state where Seladore intends to imminently apply for a Foreign Law Practice Licence.

The move underscores Seladore’s commitment to providing specialist expertise from strategically important hubs, as the firm’s capacity continues to grow through key appointments across its global network.

An international arbitration specialist, Liang-Ying joins Seladore after a decade at Herbert Smith Freehills (HSF) in New York. Whilst at HSF, Liang-Ying was recognised as a Rising Star in International Arbitration by Law360.

Liang-Ying’s arrival at Seladore follows the recent appointment of Laurence (Larry) Shore to lead the firm’s Milan office, marking another step in Seladore’s efforts to build a distinguished team in international arbitration. Former colleagues at HSF in New York, Liang-Ying and Larry have also collaborated as Associate Editor and Editor, respectively, for International Arbitration in the United States, a leading publication in the field. All of Seladore’s seven partners have practiced at HSF, creating a team bound by a shared commitment to excellence in dispute resolution.

Qualified in both New York and Singapore, Liang-Ying’s return to Singapore also marks a professional homecoming, having commenced her career as a Justices’ Law Clerk at the Supreme Court of Singapore. Her background includes practising as an associate at Rajah & Tann, one of Singapore’s ‘Big Four’ law firms, as well as international experience with Gibson Dunn & Crutcher in New York prior to joining HSF.

Liang-Ying graduated with first-class honours from the National University of Singapore and served there as an adjunct tutor in Constitutional and Administrative Law, before undertaking an LLM at Harvard Law School.

Singapore’s importance as a global dispute resolution hub continues to grow, buoyed by the prominence of both the Singapore International Arbitration Centre and Singapore International Commercial Court, as well as the city-state’s increasing popularity amongst regional high-net-worth individuals. As Seladore works towards establishing its presence in Singapore, the firm is dedicated to providing clients with comprehensive dispute resolution services across a range of jurisdictions and arbitral rules.

Simon Bushell, Senior Partner at Seladore, commented:

Liang-Ying brings a wealth of international arbitration experience and a depth of knowledge that will greatly enhance our team’s ability to serve clients worldwide. Her experience in New York and Singapore, alongside her work with leading institutions in international arbitration, will add valuable perspective and insight as Seladore extends its reach into Asia.

As we look to establish our presence in Singapore, Liang-Ying’s expertise and familiarity with both the region and our firm’s culture will be invaluable assets. Her addition strengthens Seladore’s commitment to providing top-tier arbitration services from strategic locations around the world.

Liang-Ying Tan added:

Joining Seladore presents an exciting opportunity to work alongside esteemed colleagues, including many familiar faces, across multiple jurisdictions. I look forward to returning home to support clients in one of the world’s most dynamic dispute resolution centres, contributing to the firm’s work as we grow in Asia.
